Rim Rock Railroad, Norton, Virginia - 1974
Our family visit to Rim Rock Railroad Park in Norton, Virginia in 1974, along with my cousin. An originally silent 8mm home movie with added soundtrack. The Class of 1974 Thomas Jefferson Sculpture and Garden
The Darden Class of 1974 has always been gracious and devoted supporters of the Darden School. Whether through the endowment of scholarships, contributions to the Darden Annual Fund or strong volunteer leadership, the Class of 1974, energized by their passion, continues to be committed to making Darden a leading institution and an exceptional community. During their 30th reunion, the Class of 1974 discussed ideas for a class gift as a lasting reminder of their experience and presence at Darden. The Class was adamant about giving the Darden community a gift that could be enjoyed by all members, past, present and future. Through these discussions, The Class of 1974 Thomas Jefferson Sculpture and Garden was conceived and brought to life. An advisory committee comprised of members of the Class of 1974, scholars from the University of Virginia and experts from Monticello and the Thomas Jefferson Foundation completed a rigorous process of choosing a sculpture firm, eventually deciding on Daub Firmin Hendrickson of Berkeley, California. The committee and the sculptors spent two years researching, designing and installing the sculptor and garden. The sculpture of Thomas Jefferson is unique, not only to Darden but also to the University of Virginia. In this sculpture, Jefferson is portrayed during a later stage in life at the age of 74. This was the age at which Mr. Jefferson fathered the University of Virginia. As the Class of 1974 approach this stage in life, as others have and will, they are reminded of the vigor Jefferson possessed at 74. The location of the sculpture, another essential part of the gift, was decided to be near the Elizabeth and Gary T. Jones Fountain with a garden of plants indigenous to Monticello and Albemarle County at the end of Flagler Courtyard. An atmosphere of contemplation, reflection and enjoyment, one which Jefferson himself would have relished, will be available to all members of the Darden community on behalf of the Class of 1974. The gift of The Class of 1974 Thomas Jefferson Sculpture and Garden will not only be a remarkable addition to the Darden grounds, but will also be a constant reminder of the Darden Schools connection with the University of Virginia and its father, Thomas Jefferson.
