NBA Summer League 08: Kings-Blazers 75-74 OT
LAS VEGAS, July 15 -- Jason Thompson's and-one bucket in overtime lifted the Sacramento Kings over the Portland Trail Blazers, 75-74, in the last game of the day inside the COX Pavilion at the 2008 NBA Summer League Presented by EA SPORTS. Sacramento's leading scorer was Quincy Douby with 24 points. He was supported by Thompson and his 17 points off the bench. "We are trying to get wins," Douby said. "I know it's just summer league, but I still want to win and to have a winning attitude." The opening stanza featured an 11-0 run by Sacramento, however that was immediately followed by a 12-0 run by Portland to close out the final few minutes of the quarter to make the score 19-15. Portland guard Jerryd Bayless was the only player at halftime to score in double figures with 14 points, including 11 in the first quarter. The Kings came out of the locker room and took control of the third quarter behind Douby who scored 14 points in the period and gave Sacramento a 58-50 lead. The fourth quarter was tight the rest of the way after Portland started off with a 12-2 run. The Kings were up two with 30 seconds to play, but Douby was unsuccessful in converting two free-throws to put the game away. Bayless came down and nailed a tough jumper to send it to overtime. After baskets were exchanged in overtime, Thompson converted a three-point play with 12.7 seconds left was enough to put away the Blazers. Portland got another great performance from Bayless, who scored a game high 26 points. His backcourt mate Petteri Koponen turned in a solid game with 18 points of his own. Notes: The Kings square off against the Mavericks in Wednesday's second game inside COX Pavilion and the Blazers will face the Timberwolves in Thursday's last game at COX Pavilion. Made by NBA TV.

Erotic Encounters: Cavafy Poems 74-77
Cavafy Poems 74 - 77 Here are four more of my translations of Cavafy's poems and no. 77 means we are halfway through the canon of 154 poems, although there are further non-canonical poems which I hope to translate also in due course. With regard to No. 77 General Galba became Emperor following Nero's suicide in 68 AD. Galba himself however retained the imperial purple (had he time to put it on) for a short interlude only. 74. AT THE HARBOUR Foreigners brought him to our tiny harbour; name of Emis; twenty-eight years old. He'd left his country to learn the incense trade; took sick on the water; died when he disembarked at this god-forsaken Syrian anchorage miles from anywhere, a sullen coast, whispering of his home and aged parents. We placed him in a pauper's grave. No one had heard of his people. We did not know from which of the many scattered Greek townships he had come, travelling here to Syria to die. It's just as well: with us he is at peace, at home in our tiny harbour, his ungrieved parents fondly imagining their son still lives. 75. BODY, REMEMBER I do not alone recall, not only recall erotic encounters, body to body on a rumpled bed, actual physical concourse of the flesh. Precious to the remembering mind those rarified conjunctions - eyes that stared in instant passion, voices breaking mid-sentence - leading to no seminal conclusion. Both recollections empowering, each fulfilling; consummation equally achieved by physical contact and Platonic junction, eyes and voice alone - glances as passionate kisses; the accentual carress. 76. TOMB OF LANES Marcus, you will not find him here, your much loved Lanes. This tomb is empty of the being you adored. The hours you spend here, the tears you shed, are wasted. You know where you will find him; where memory can feed and loss be calmed. You have his living portrait in your house. There his precious lineaments, preserved, retain the presence of the man you loved, enshrining, not entombing, his breathing spirit. Remember when you fetched from the consulate that famed Kyrenian artist who, when he viewed your Lanes then alive, insisted he be shown as Hyakinthos? (Thinking to broaden the appeal of his own art.) This Lanes refused and ordered the Kyrenian not to portray him as Hyakinthos but as Lanes, son of Rametichos of Alexandria. 77. NERO'S TERM A young Nero is come to Delphi: ascends the gorge in splendour, bathes in the sacred spring; consults the Oracle, of course. "Danger! Danger! Age seventy-three!" cries the Pythoness in agony, rockface reverberating with the crazy sound. Nero's relieved. He's only thirty. Plenty of scope to outwit the approaching threat. (Thus the pitfalls of egocentricity!) He's tired now. Time to return to Rome. Wonderfully worn out from days of pleasure, lascivious days, moonfed nights, theatres, scented gardens, grottos, groves, one warm brown yielding body on a bed; twilight hours in the sumptuous cities of Achaia, naked flesh, athletic bodies. Plenty of time, young Nero thinks, fresh-faced at only thirty - when he stops to think of the mad and staring Pythoness. (Thus the pitfalls of egocentricity!) Meanwhile power-hungry in far Spain General Galba drills his private army, General Galba, aged seventy-three.
